An invitation to slow down, connect, and gather.

We believe--and have personally witnessed countless times in our own lives-- that when women gather to learn, create and share, it is a transformative act. Now that we are into our 7th season leading mushroom foraging adventures in Mexico, it was time to create an opportunity for such transformation within the land with which we've become so familiar.

Mycelium Mysteries Mexico, a collaboration with Midwest Women's Herbal, is an invitation to return to the woods of ancient days, slow down, connect with the land, and honor the wisdom of women who have sustained their communities for generations through food, craft, medicine, and more.

Guided by local mushroom foragers, herbalists, silk artisans, and more—and led by Kim Hunter (The Fungivore/ Traveling Traders Bazaar) and Linda Conroy (Mycelium Mysteries/ Midwest Women's Herbal)—this journey drops you into a living culture of fungi, craft, and deep relationship with nature. Building on 10 years of Mycelium Mysteries gatherings in Wisconsin, together we’ll forage in the forests and feast on what we find, explore traditional medicine, dye with mushrooms and plants, and celebrate the resilience and depth of women’s knowledge in Oaxaca.

The Sierra Norte mountains--and Oaxaca City--are resplendent with artisans of antiquity: weaving, farming, foraging and family that has persisted through millennia. For our week together, we will peer through the lens of the women who steward land; who provide for the health of their communities; who utilize fungi and lichens in a seasonal pulse; who cultivate and weave traditional fibers; and through whom the ancestral knowledge of the Zapotec people has been preserved.

During our Mycelium Mysteries Mexico adventure, we will forage mushrooms, learn about leaves, roots, bark and flowers that are used as medicine in the mountain communities; we will see the silk producing village of San Pedro Cajonos, where Kim will introduce you to her friends and partners: the master dyers and silk producers, weavers with whom the Fungivore and Traveling Traders have been working for four years now.

The history of the area runs deeper than memory: we will see the ruins of great empires, as well as remains of 12,000 year old caves, where the origins of Mesoamerican agriculture have been found; and we will see the in real life
Women’s craft and cooperative economies, including community cooperatives in weaving, pine needle basketry, and natural dyeing.

This is a trip to peal back so many layers of the history of "woman's work:" that of preserving and maintain community through art and wisdom.

Come with us.
