The Fungivore 2024 MycoAdventures!
Join one (or more) of five adventures this year, spanning from July to October. Three are focusing on the culinary side--and edible mushrooms--of Oaxaca, We are bringing Alissa Allen back for two focused on the artisan craft side--using mushrooms as natural dyes; and a final adventure in Chiapas to explore a mix of both! Each adventure begins in the city for an unforgettable welcome dinner, and then heads up into the mountains for community foraging, hiking, mycology and cultural immersion. |
ALL of our trips feature a guest expert, local nature guides and Mexican mycology experts, as well as opportunities for meaningful cultural exchange with the indigenous communities that have existed here for thousands of years. Past experts include luminaries such as Alissa Allen, Alan Rockefeller, Cheshire Mayrsohn, and Mario Gabiati. This year, we are excited to welcome our 2024 expert lineup Alissa Allen returns, and Christian Schwarz join us for the first time, along with our Mexican partners Celestino Mendez, Iñaki Oyarvide Ibarrola and Chef Ariadna Pinacho.

MyComida Culinary Adventures
w/ Chef Zachary Hunter & Friends
Our food focused adventures cover everything from prix-fix meals (5-courses or more) to all-night roasted barbacoa (that you can help prepare!) with the mountain communities, to market adventures and meals with chefs of Oaxaca known for their expertise in preparing the locally eaten wild mushrooms.
For our first trip we will visit some of the most important ruins & prehistoric caves, hunt mushrooms, hike daily through gorgeous landscapes, we will explore medicinal herbs, engage in a cooking class, learn from the mountain Zapotec communities the use of the ancient Milpa System of agriculture, and of course hike and explore Oaxaca’s natural wonders that will simply blow your mind! Our final MyComida adventure is a bit more science-fun-academic, where we will take a leap into the identification and the chemistry and flavors of edible mushrooms, learn theories of cooking and get into the mycology and ecology of the area with none other than Christian Schwarz, famed author of “Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast!” |

MyColores Artisan Adventures with Kimberly Hunter
& featuring Alissa Allen
This year we are going deep into the mountains of Oaxaca to learn the art of foraging and dyeing with mushrooms and lichens with Alissa Allen of Mycopigments, on her third year joining The Fungivore in Oaxaca.
For our first adventure, we will see the wide array of artisan crafts for which Oaxaca is known, and play in the Sierra Sur, with cozy cabins and culinary delights served by mushroom chef Ariadne Pinacho. We will also explore some of the local crafts of wild forest medicines, as well as meet local weavers and dyers. Our second adventure brings us back to the Sierra Norte, where we will explore the region for dye mushrooms with the San Pedro Cajonos community and dye with the silk-producing artisans there. |

Perhaps one of the most fascinating landscapes in North America, the idyllic town of San Cristobal in the Highlands of Chiapas is a mountain Mayan colonial-style town where you will still hear local languages in the markets and broadcast over the radio.
Situated in the stunning valleys of sheer limestone cliffs, we will explore caves, canyons, the old city, and stunning forests all within an hours drive of the city to find a wide variety of fungi. We are thrilled to have Christian Schwarz, renowned author of "Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast" joining us in 2024!
